Kevin Carroll, a clinical neuropsychologist at the Northern California Health Care System, is being recognized for advancing patient rehabilitation through the development of a virtual rehabilitation game. Funded by VISN 21's Innovator Awards, this game uses a 3D depth camera to create engaging rehabilitation exercises for patients with brain traumas.
Dr. Carroll's efforts began with a successful case study demonstrating how a patient with diabetic neuropathy benefited from combining virtual reality (VR) sessions with traditional therapy. The VR sessions improved the patient’s gait stability and endurance, as well as their confidence in walking, showing both subjective and objective gains. This evidence supports VR as a valuable adjunct to conventional therapies, enhancing patient engagement and rehabilitation outcomes.
In his role as Entrepreneur in Residence, Dr. Carroll is working to refine and expand this VR tool for use in various settings, including acute care, outpatient services, and home environments. He collaborates with undergraduate students from the Advanced Game Design Program at Clayton Valley Charter High School, integrating community involvement and practical experience into the project.
The benefits of these achievements are substantial: the virtual rehabilitation game offers a cost-effective, scalable solution that enhances traditional therapy methods. By fostering improved patient outcomes and involving high school students in meaningful projects, Dr. Carroll's work supports both veterans and the broader community, potentially transforming rehabilitation practices on a large scale.
