The Federal Mobility Group (FMG) is being recognized for playing a crucial role in advancing federal mobile emerging technology and services, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the integration of mobile devices across federal agencies. As a key Community of Practice under the Chief Information Officers Council (CIO-C), FMG is a mobility focused community of practice that supports federal Dept of Defense and Civilian agency staff that manage over 1.5 million mobile devices and approximately $1 billion annual budget. It addresses the growing challenges and cybersecurity threats associated with emerging mobile technology, ensuring that federal agencies can operate securely and effectively.

FMG has made significant contributions in several areas. In mobile security, it has produced essential reports and previously identified new data elements for FISMA reporting, which have improved visibility into each agency’s mobile security posture and facilitated compliance with mandated security credentials, while FISMA mobile data was being collected. In the realm of 5G and mobile network infrastructure, FMG has played a pivotal role by hosting industry experts, organizing lab tours for CIOs, CISOs, CTSs, and Senior Executives, and developed important reports that guide the adoption of next-generation mobile technologies. Its efforts in mission enablement include creating guidance for protecting government owned mobile devices during international travel and developing solutions for federal recordkeeping related to mobile text messages. Additionally, FMG has identified new mobility categories and acquisition pathways, helping agencies make informed decisions regarding their approximately $1 billion annual expenditure on mobility-related products and services.

These contributions have had substantial benefits for the public by enhancing the security, efficiency, and effectiveness of federal mobile technology use. FMG’s work has ensured that federal agencies can securely adopt and manage advanced mobile technologies, thereby improving public services and maintaining robust protection against emerging threats. Their educational efforts and publications have kept federal agencies informed about the latest developments, threat landscape, and best practices in mobile technology.

FMG’s leadership and achievements have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Fed100 Award and AFCEA’s InnovateIT Awards Emerging Government Leader Award, underscoring its significant impact on federal mobile technology and services.
