Gregory’s Outreach

Diana Gregory and Dr. Isabel Kozak are being recognized for transforming customer service at the Phoenix VA Health Care System since 2017 with their initiative, Veggies for Veterans. They co-founded this program to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to Veterans, starting with those in transitional housing and expanding to include all Veterans across multiple VA locations.

The program, funded by corporate sponsors through Gregory’s 501(c)(3) organization, offers free produce sourced from local farms. This initiative not only supports the local economy but also fosters community engagement, with corporate volunteers helping distribute the produce. The markets have become a popular and valued resource for Veterans, who often travel to the VA specifically for these distributions.

In addition to fresh produce, the program provides nutritional education, recipes, and various health-related incentives such as blood pressure cuffs and mobile flu clinics. It also offers additional support like clothing, dental hygiene kits, and special events, enhancing the overall Veteran experience. The program has garnered significant media attention and strong support from Phoenix VA administrators, with full funding secured for 2024 to continue distributing 3,000 bags of produce.

The benefits of Veggies for Veterans are substantial. Since its inception, the program has served over 18,000 Veterans, with data showing a 100% increase in fruit and vegetable consumption among transitional housing Veterans. Satisfaction rates have been consistently high, and the program has successfully attracted new Veterans to the VA. Additionally, the Phoenix VA was recognized with a Shark Tank award for expanding the initiative to curbside home delivery, ensuring homebound Veterans receive fresh produce consistently.

Overall, Veggies for Veterans exemplifies excellent customer service and effectively addresses food insecurity among Veterans, making it a model program worthy of replication at other VA facilities.
